Susan "Sue" Fleischl, founder of The Great Catering Company, never thought she would start her own business. Sue considered herself more a follower than a leader. This is hard to believe since she was so engaging during our interview and her personality filled the room. When Sue Fleischl was working abroad or in New Zealand for other people, she would always jot down notes at the end of the day regarding what went well and how things can be improved. These thoughts came in handy in 1995, when Sue Fleischl decided that she could do things better than the places she was working. She started by buying a stainless steel bench (it still sits in the company's kitchen) and stuck it in her living room. She exhorted herself to think B-I-G and to grow into it. That's how she landed on the name, The Great Catering Company, even though it was just her and a bench.

Baking Culture into bka Interactive

Like Marlaine McCauley of Apex Facility Resources, Barbara "Barb" Anderson also took an unconventional route to starting bka Interactive. Barb went to Otaga University to become a teacher, but she admits that she never really felt like it was a perfect fit. She didn't like it too much, and after her youngest child was born, she quit and went to back to school to study art.
