Top Things Employees Would Change About Their Managers [New Report]

As we enter the new year, we were curious to know what employees really had on their workplace wish list. And so, we asked. Our New Year Employee Report probed full-time workers on the top changes they would make to their managers and organizations, if only they had the power. 

Just take a look at the answers to this question, “If you could change one thing about your manager in the new year, what would it be?” We sure were surprised by the top 5 answers:

Turns out, more than anything, employees wished their managers were more open communicators. This respondent said it best, “I would have my boss improve their communication skills to be more direct and empowering rather than passive aggressive and emotional.”

Sadly though, the #2 most popular response was a desire for their boss to quit. Some managers are so irredeemable that employees see no hope for them at all!

Remarkably, 3 out of the top 5 responses focused on interpersonal skills and communication. At the end of the day, employees want managers that treat them like colleagues. Bosses that fail to treat their teams with respect, and forgo transparent, candid conversation are the most irksome managers around.

It’s time to think about what your new year’s resolutions should be. If you’re a manager, it looks like at least one of those resolutions should focus on improving your day-to-day communications with your team.
