Turnover, disengagement, feeling undervalued—these are just a few pitfalls of having unhappy employees. And to be frank, there's no reason employees should be feeling unhappy.
Our 2015 Best Industry Ranking Report asked over 30,000 employees in various industries how happy they were at their workplace. And surprisingly, manufacturing ranked dead last at #12. Here are the factors that contributed to their unhappiness:
It turns out these employees feel like their managers are the ones bringing them down. From lack of tools to lack of processes, these all fall under a manager’s responsibilities.
“I don’t feel like there is much career growth and my manager(s) are not supportive of my growth,” says one manufacturing employee. Regardless of industry, people want to develop professionally.
Another employee adds, “Procedures are rarely the same for more than two days running as ideas and speculations change, and with no real thought process of how it should be done, we end up chasing our tails the majority of the time.” Managers aren’t giving their employees a clear direction, and direction is critical for success.
So if you don’t want your employees to be feeling the same, make sure you're being a supportive leader. Offer developmental opportunities, give them the proper tools, and provide a clear direction. Start with those basics, and you’ll be able to do wonders with employee retention.
