photo_(2)_(1)Congrats to Coalters for winning the 2015 TINYpulse Employee Recognition Award for the Real Estate industry.

Reuben Barrett, Managing Director of Coalters, founded the company by working from a spare bedroom at his home in York. From his humble beginning to now being an industry leader, Barrett shared with us how Coalters keeps their employees happy.

Q: Tell us about some of the great things you do in your workplace that keep employees engaged and energized.

A: Keeping our team engaged and motivated is of paramount importance to us. We love to recognize achievements, and we’ll make a song and dance about it—literally! We’ll ring a bell, we’ll whoop and cheer; we love to let our team know how valued their contribution is to our success.

Q: Tell us a little bit about what your company does and why employee recognition is so important to you.

A: We are a leading estate and letting agent based in York, England, and one of the reasons we have done (and continue to do) so well is that we have a great team of people. Each and every staff member has an important role to play. We couldn’t do it without them and their commitment to grow and develop with us as a company. Our team works hard, and we appreciate that! We are committed to ensuring that they are recognized for their contribution.

Q: What kind of improvements/changes have you seen in your culture after using TINYpulse?

A: We have a ‘share the love’ culture! TINYpulse has enabled us to be more mindful of recognizing the contributions of our peers, and dropping them a quick Cheers for Peers is now no longer something we need to remind the team to do—this is now an integral part of what we do. And the smile that appears on the face of the colleague receiving the cheers is priceless. It’s the little things like this that can make a big difference.

Q: How do you tailor the way you recognize to different employees (e.g. millennials, boomers, introverts, extroverts)?

A: We are hands-on managers, and we know our teams well. Whether our teams prefer a whoop and a cheer, a bottle of bubbly, or a subtle pat on the back with a quiet "well done," we will ensure that each and every team member receives the recognition they deserve.

Q: What is one of the best/funniest Cheers for Peers sent out by your team?

A: It’s hard to narrow it down to just one cheers. We have some great characters in our office, so humor is often involved! The common theme that runs throughout our cheers tends to be about passion, dedication, and going the extra mile. And with a team that strives to provide just that, we can only continue to grow and be successful. But one thing is for sure—we will always appreciate and continue to recognize the people that make such a huge contribution to that: our fantastic team.

Thank you to Reuben and his team at Coalters for sharing their story! Keep an eye out for more interviews with TINYpulse award winners.
