Handy Networks is a company that offers web-hosting solutions. And their Hosting Support Manager, Anthony Francis, explains:
“We want our employees to care about what they do and how they do it. One of the key elements to this is showing them that we care about them.”
Team building isn't something that you can force upon employees. And to eliminate any awkward interactions, Anthony turned to his coworkers to find out what they want. He leveraged an online portal in lieu of an old suggestion box and was able to gather input from his workforce quickly and anonymously.
One of the top suggestions was a monthly staff happy hour, which they've since implemented as a way for employees to get to know one another and discuss issues.
And the key to getting these suggestions to work is to acknowledge them. You don't necessarily need to use them; you just need to recognize that they're there.
No one can say it better than Anthony: "We always provide feedback to every suggestion and comment that our employees make. If we're not going to implement a suggestion, we tell them why."
