Tobii’s vision is creating “a world where all technology works in harmony with natural human behavior.” So it only seems fitting that the leading tech company pays close attention to their own employees’ behaviors and emotions.
Jesper Högström, Research and Development Manager in Tobii's Stockholm office, recently shared some successful employee onboarding tactics with us. Here’s what he recommends:
A: We assign a mentor to each person. The mentor is a key person in making sure people feel welcome. They help explain our initiatives, such as the biweekly one-on-ones, innovation projects, book readings, and the team culture.
The team is also made aware the importance of embracing new people. Quite often I also remember to buy welcome flowers for the new colleague.
A: I make sure to ask everyone at their first one-on-one what they expect and want from me as their manager. I follow up on their satisfaction every two weeks (and onward).
Since I don’t generally direct the everyday work of everyone but leave that to the teams, I follow up with the mentor, the two assigned observers, and the team lead monthly over the course of six months.
I also share the feedback from those meetings with the new employee. I make this process known in advance, and we have a set of questions that we cover during these meetings pertaining to team integration/interaction, general competence, quality of work, and such.
A: In many ways I like to think of us as a beehive or an anthill — lots of work going on, seemingly uncoordinated, yet everyone has a purpose and contributes to the well-being of the whole. Also, these communities make up a much more complex system than any individual member is capable of on their own.
