Heather Neisen, HR Manager at TechnologyAdvice, shares her story from a previous job.
“When I got to the office, my supervisor told me I needed to go all the way to another office within a different building to visit HR and get my benefits paperwork.
"When I arrived in the HR office, they didn't have my name on file, and they handed me a generic packet of information and told me to fill it out in the next few weeks. It was my first professional job with benefits, so I asked if they could sit down with me and talk about my options. They seemed very annoyed and told me they couldn't suggest anything because that was the law. No one in my department seemed to know any more information either.”
Patrick Garmoe, Ecommerce Manager at TravelEx Insurance, recalls his first job in a new career.
“The manager made a point of making sure he was off on my first day. I barely knew where I was sitting when his boss started yelling at me to get a condition report. It was my first day at my first newspaper, and I had no idea what a condition report even was.”
Leave It Be
Mike Collins, Owner of WealthyTurtle.com, had a bad experience when he was barely out of college.
“My new manager met me at the door and dropped me off at my desk without even bothering to show me around or introduce me to a soul. I had to ask someone to help me find the restrooms. I didn't have a minute's worth of training when she dropped off a file for me to work on with no explanation at all as to what I should do with it. I seriously felt like George Costanza being handed the Penske file!”
Yada, Yada, Yada
Three years ago, Marilyn Paige was hired to be the Communications Director at a company.
"On my first day, the owner of the company took me into his office at 9:00 a.m. and talked. And talked. And talked. He called it my 'training,' but there was zero instruction involved. He talked for 8 hours about himself and how smart he was and how he clever he was to do this and that and the other thing."
