About Office Sign Company
Office Sign Company has had a great year. First they were selected to join the Google Trusted Stores program, and now they've just won a TINYpulse award for their commitment to employee engagement. It's no surprise since they're the industry leader in professional office signs, door signs, and any other sign imaginable for the workplace.
We got a chance to speak with the team to go behind the scenes of the organization and find out what makes Office Sign Company one of the best places to work. Let's see what they had to say.
Q: What was the funniest recognition you’ve ever received?
A:
Q: What was the happiest moment at work?
A: Although there have been many happy moments at Office Sign Company over the years, one hits home more than any other. In June 2015, we were awarded Small Business of the Year honors at Fargo’s Chamber Choice Award Ceremony. This day was particularly special for our team because it was a testament to the time and effort that each employee sacrificed to help us achieve this honor. After winning the award, we celebrated with a DQ Ice Cream Cake and plenty of smiles. The Award is now placed on our front desk in the lobby of our office and exists as a constant reminder of what we have accomplished as a company.
Q: What kind of fun activities does your company participate in?
A: Our CEO and management team here at OSC have worked hard to create a culture that incorporates as much fun as possible into our weeks. During the summer, we partake in events such as our Celebration of Rad Employees Day, where this year, we had Famous Daves catering and attended an event at an outdoor amphitheater.
We also have season tickets to the FM Redhawks (a local baseball team) and all of our employees got paid to attend a game this past August. Throughout the rest of the year, we celebrate potlucks on nearly every holiday and have a post-Christmas Party every January.
To further validate how present “fun” is in our company’s culture, we have a pinball machine in the office and a keg in our break room. Needless to say, there’s no shortage of good times at Office Sign Company.
Q: What is the one thing that every company can do to make their employees happier?
A: One of the best ways to make employees happier is to recognize them for their hard work. Fostering a workplace that values employee recognition has been a large, but necessary undertaking for our company.
Although hosting events for the team is also a great strategy for brightening moods around the office, showing gratitude to employees for their hard work and devotion to our company is hands-down the best tactic for boosting spirits.
Luckily, we came across TINYpulse, which allows for us to send Cheers to other members of the team. These Cheers are small excerpts that involve thanking a coworker for going out of their way to help you out or simply acknowledging the hard work of an individual or group. Recognizing employees for their hard work is a surefire way to keep your team happy.
Q: If you could describe your work culture in three words, what would they be?
A:
- Inclusive: We employ a diverse range of personalities at Office Sign Company, but all of them blend together to create one cohesive culture. Although previous experience, education, and other considerations are important with prospective employees, the main question we wish to have answered in an interview is, “How will you blend in with our culture?” We want to make sure we are employing individuals who value teamwork and inclusivity as much as we do. Office Sign Company is sort of like the theme song to Cheers: a place where everybody knows your name.
- Entrepreneurial: Office Sign Company was created in our CEO’s basement in 2008 and has now asserted itself as one of the top interior sign providers in the nation — a feat that could not have been achieved without our entrepreneurial spirit. Being an entrepreneur doesn’t only entail starting a company, but it also refers to implementing a system which cultivates creativity and feeds off employee’s ideas. It is not only the job of our management team to innovate new products and processes, but rather the whole team is encouraged to dream up ways to make our company better. We employ a vast range of talented persons here who have all bought into the entrepreneurial vibe that permeates our office.
- Empathetic: We genuinely care about each other here at Office Sign Company. Although we are a hard-working group that sets grand goals for ourselves, we realize that mental breaks are needed and that culture and happiness are important considerations when it comes to employee retention. All-staff meetings occur monthly in which employees are made aware of company updates and are encouraged to voice their opinions on anything that has caused them confusion or frustration. Furthermore, employees meet with their managers regularly to discuss how things are going. Creating a culture that is empathetic to the needs of our employees has served a great function in retaining talented employees and in building strong relationships between coworkers.
