Hi there,

TINYpulse’s current homepage features this claim:

Measure how happy, frustrated, or burnt-out your employees are.

Before I started working here, I didn’t really have a concept of what “burnout” was. I thought, well, some people like their jobs, some people find their jobs soul-sucking, and that if people are dreading going to work, there’s not much to be done.

I’m a little more enlightened now - and since you’re getting this newsletter, you probably are too. Burnout is a reality, and it’s bad news for everyone involved. I’m glad we’re starting to take it seriously.

Sending this during the (Northern Hemisphere) summer feels appropriate; I know I’ll get a lot of out-of-office replies, and I hope that those recipients can delete or archive this message. Lots of these pieces talk about how important it is to take breaks and set boundaries.

Let me issue a little content warning about the very first link, the Financial Times story on “the trillion-dollar taboo”; there are mentions of (though no graphic depictions) of suicide.

Take care of you,

Tyler

When Passion Leads to Burnout

For decades, the term “burnout” has been deprioritized — wrongly accused of being some made-up, first-world crisis, most likely drummed up by millennials and Gen Zers who want more work-life balance.

Our best bet against burnout is self-care, just not the kind you think

I decided to learn as much as possible about how providers help people recover from burnout. To my surprise, few academics study this question because burnout, at least in the U.S., is not an official medical condition.
